Bilingual & ESL

Planning CC Aligned and Integrated Units

Developed for immigrant middle and high school students at the beginning-to-early intermediate levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) by a team of ESL experts, these three units have options for differential levels of scaffolding, including information about structuring tasks for maximal, moderate, and minimal levels of scaffolding. It is recommended that Unit One – Families, Schools and Communities is taught first, and that Unit Two – Challenges and Solutions and Unit Three – Human Migration are taught simultaneously.

Common Core-Aligned Units for High School ELLs

In collaboration with the American Institute for Research (AIR), DELLSS designed two exemplary units for HS teachers of ELLs.  These two units exemplify standard-based instruction with integrated ELL supports. The unit are designed using a segment from Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and a speech by Susan Anthony entitled Is It a Crime for a U.S. Citizen to Vote.
